Coffee: the wonder drug of the next millennium?

World media has been brimming with health bits about coffee lately. The latest I found in the news is all about how drinking coffee helps prevent gallstones.

A few cups of regular coffee per day might help prevent gallstones.
Men who drank 2 to 3 cups a day had a 40% lower risk of developing gallstones than men who did not drink regular coffee. Better still men who drank 4 or more cups a day had a 45% lower risk of developing gallstones.

Gallstones are deposits of cholesterol in the gall bladder, the organ under the liver that stores bile. They can be very painful and affect a large number of people in Australia. They actually hospitalise 800,000 Americans. Coffee with caffeine was found to stimulate contractions in the gallbladder and lower cholesterol in bile that can form painful gallstones.

So - as you enjoy your specialty Caddies coffee you may be saving yourself a lot of pain.

Decaffeinated coffees don't have the same effect. Caffeine is the key. Unfortunately caffeinated tea and soda didn't appear to have the same effect so Caddies coffee is the only way to go.

Dr. Michael F. Leitzmann from the Havard University School of Public Health conducted this study on men who were 40-75 years old in 1986. The study extended from 1986 to 1996 and covered 46 008 men. It was part of an overall study on diet and lifestyle factors for men of this age group. This is a study done specifically on men, however "Leitzmann said he believes the findings would have been the same in women, but a separate study would address that matter".
Leitzmann also confirmed what we already know:- coffee doesn't cause any other major diseases.
